In 2018, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) observed ‘Betrayal Day’ in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The party was in opposition and the NDA government led by TDP was in power in the state with N Chandrababu Naidu as the CM.
The agenda of the programme was to highlight that the ruling party could not manage to get a special category status for the state, even after four years after bifurcation. In the 2019 elections, YSRCP came to power and TDP was relegated to the opposition.
In 2025, the YSRCP is back as an opposition party and the TDP is in power in alliance with the BJP and the Jana Sena Party (JSP). This time, the YSRCP is once again back with another edition of ‘Betrayal Day’ and it will be observed on June 4 across the state.
The agenda has changed and the issue is no longer related to the special category status. Through the protests that will be held on Wednesday, the YSRCP wants to corner the TDP and CM Naidu on the unfulfilled poll promises.
The party workers and supporters will hold demonstrations after which representations will be given to the local officials. The TDP had pitched the ‘super six’, along with a set of poll promises ahead of the 2024 elections. The YSRCP argues that none of them have been implemented so far.

June 4 also marks one year since the power shift in the state. Speaking to the media, Devineni Avinash, YSRCP leader from Vijayawada, said the TDP government could not fulfil any promise or assurances that were guaranteed to people prior to the election, as a result of which farmers, women, and marginalised sections were affected and the YSRCP sees this as a ‘betrayal’ of the voters.
While unveiling the poster of the ‘Betrayal Day’, senior YSRCP leader, Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy said TDP was resorting to diversion tactics to cover up for the misgovernance. AP CM Naidu in the past said that the state’s financial position was facing distress but they are trying their best to fulfil the poll promises.
JSP, part of the ruling NDA alliance, has initiated a counter-move against YSRCP for June 4 programme. The party has decided to celebrate June 4 as the day when democracy was restored and they will mark the day with celebratory events.
