A class 2 student died, and 53 others were hospitalised after they reportedly fell ill after being administered chloroquine tablets at the Gollaguppa in Yetapaka Mandal of Polavaram district in Andhra Pradesh

The students were rushed to Government Area Hospital at Bhadrachalam in the district late on Tuesday night.

One of the students was said to be in an unconscious state, and 20 were seriously ill, doctors said.

Sources said that a student, Paddam Roja, died after suffering from malaria last Friday in the village.

Following the incident, the local doctors organised a health camp at Gollaguppa and chloroquine tablets were administered to 73 people at a government school and an Anganwadi centre at around 3:30 pm on Tuesday. Several students reported developing symptoms such as vomiting after returning home.

As of Wednesday morning, 29 patients, including children and adults, are undergoing treatment

A second standard student, Madavi Jamuna, 7, suffered from vomiting at home and then was rushed to Lakshmipuram Primary Health Centre in Polavaram. She was declared dead at the centre; her body was moved to Bhadrachalam for an autopsy.

“Three specialised medical teams from the state level, Kakinada, and Rajahmundry, along with three paediatricians, have arrived at Gollaguppa to set up a dedicated medical camp and conduct continuous screenings,” Dinesh Kumar, the collector, stated, saying that the situation in under control.

Chief Minister N Chandraprabha naidu has ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed authorities to ensure the highest quality of medical treatment for all affected villagers.
