The Delhi University on Thursday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for visiting its North Campus without informing the authorities.

In an official release, the university termed Gandhi’s action as a breach of institutional protocol and a disruption of student governance operations.

"Today Shri Rahul Gandhi came to University of Delhi without any information to the authorities. He stayed in the DUSU Office for almost one hour. During this time, the DUSU was cordoned by security cover. Shri Rahul Gandhi has done this for the second time for coming to the University without any intimation and information to University of Delhi," it said.

According to reports, Gandhi, who is also the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, interacted with students from Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) at the DU's North Campus, focusing on issues of representation, equality and academic justice.

The session was held at the office of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president. The university in its statement alleged that the arrea was cordoned off by security officials and even the DUSU secretary was barred from accessing her office.

"The university condemns such action and hopes that this does not happen in future," the release said.

The incident also sparked off a political row with the BJP accusing Gandhi of turning Delhi University into a circus for a "surprise photo-op".

"At a time when the entire nation is united behind our brave soldiers, the Congress would do well to remember: India is watching. And it won't forget these games," BJP's IT cell head Amit Malviya said.
