West Bengal Eid celebrations: ‘It is majority’s duty to protect minority’, says Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she is even ready to sacrifice her life for the unity of all religions. Extending Eid celebrations on Monday, Banerjee said urged the public not to fall into the trap of “divisive politics”.

The West Bengal chief minister took part in the Eid prayers programme on Red Road and said the state government stands with minorities. “Provocations are being made to fuel riots, but please don't fall into these traps. The West Bengal government stands with the minorities. No one can provoke tensions in the state,” the Trinamool Congress leader said. Banerjee said no one could stir tensions in the state.

Banerjee charged that the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to do "divisive politics” and called it "jumla politics". "If they (BJP) have problems with the minorities, will they change the Constitution of the country?" Banerjee attacked. The chief minister said they are secular and also extended wishes to Navratri celebrations.

"We do not want anyone to create chaos. Common people do not create chaos, but, political parties do that. This is a matter of shame. We are ready to sacrifice our lives for all religions. The duty of the majority is to protect the minority, and the duty of the minority is to stay with the majority,” Banerjee said. 

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also spoke on the occasion. “The BJP says 'Hindus are in danger', and their friends say 'Muslims are in danger'. I would ask them to remove their lens of communal politics. The truth is that the entire country is in danger because of their politics. If they try to create divisions in West Bengal, we will resist it," PTI reported quoting him.
