The MCD mayoral election is expected to be held in April. In November 2024, AAP had won the mayoral polls by three votes and now the numbers have reversed, thanks to the recent assembly polls.
This is because it is not just the councillors who can vote but also the seven Lok Sabha MPs, three Rajya Sabha MPs and 14 nominated MLAs in Delhi.
All the seven Lok Sabha MPs are from BJP while all the Rajya Sabha MPS are from AAP. With three councillors joining the BJP, they have more numbers than the AAP. Following the assembly elections, the BJP can nominate 10 of its MLAs to the MCD while AAP can only nominate four. Going by the numbers, BJP can now easily form government in Delhi at the municipal level.
In the previous MCD elections in 2022, the AAP bagged 134 wards, followed by the BJP in 104 and the Congress in nine. Three of the wards are held by Independents.
