The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is all set to register a historic win in the Erode East bypolls with the party’s candidate V.C. Chandhirakumar gaining 15,949 votes in the first two rounds of counting. There are no other prominent opposition parties in the fray except Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi.

As per results published by the Election Commission at the end of two rounds of counting, of the 19,803 votes counted, Chandhirakumar has polled 15,949 votes, leading against NTK’s M.K. Seethalakshmi by a margin of 13,621 votes; Seethalakshmi has gained 2,328 votes. 517 voters have voted for NOTA.

The Erode East bypoll was necessitated following the demise of Congress leader E.V.K.S. Elangovan in December last year. The DMK took the seat from its ally Congress and decided to contest the bypolls.
Key opposition parties, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Bharatiya Janata Party decided to boycott the election accusing the DMK of indulging in unfair practices during the polls. Actor Vijay’s recently launched party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam, also decided to boycott the bypoll.
