The health condition of jailed Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid and leader of Awami Itehad Party(AIP) has deteriorated as his indefinite hunger strike entered its eighth consecutive day. Authorities have moved him to RML Hospital in New Delhi for medical treatment.

Expressing serious concern, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said,  “Engineer Rashid’s health is in a critical state. Despite his worsening condition, his fight for justice remains resolute.” He urged the authorities to ensure Rashid receives immediate and proper medical care.

He said Rashid’s continued incarceration amid declining health is deeply worrying. “We appeal to the government to take urgent action. Justice must not only be delivered but must also be visible,” he said.

Rashid has been in jail since 2019 in connection with an alleged terror funding case. His legal team had sought parole on medical and humanitarian grounds. They argued that his prolonged detention without trial violated his rights.

In today’s hearing, however, the Delhi High Court reserved its decision on his parole plea, leaving his supporters anxious about his fate.

The AIP continues to rally public and political support for his release, reiterating its faith in the judicial system while urging humane treatment and a swift resolution of his case.

Rashid’s arrest and ongoing trial have remained a debated political issue, especially after his unexpected victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections while in prison. His supporters claim his detention is politically motivated, while the government maintains that he faces serious charges under anti-terror laws.

The MP who represents the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency is known for his strong view of Jammu and Kashmir.

An engineer by training, Rashid gained popularity as a politician because of his views on human rights, and political rights for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His view often elicited criticism from the BJP. He was briefly released from jail during assembly elections last year to campaign for his party. However, the AIP failed to make a significant impact as the party won only one seat.
