Mahakumbh stampede: Petition moved in SC demanding action against UP officials, better safety measures

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a judicial probe. Commission to submit report in one month

A petition has been moved in the Supreme Court seeking action against Uttar Pradesh government officials over the stampede during the Mahakumbh festival on Wednesday, in which at least 30 got killed and over 60 persons suffered injuries. The petitioner has also sought measures to improve safety and security at the venue.

A Public Interest Litigation has been moved in the Supreme Court by an advocate seeking directions to heighten safety measures at the Kumbh venue. The petitioner has sought improved medical facilities for devotees and providing basic information regarding Mahakumbh guidelines to the pilgrims in other languages as well, Bar and Bench reported.

The petitioner has sought announcements, display boards, directions and other information in various other languages as well for devotees, it said. The PIL also sought the deployment of medical teams by other states, in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh government, to provide medical aid for pilgrims. “All states governments with coordination of Uttar Pradesh government shall also deploy its small medical team at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh comprising of doctors and nurses so that at the time of medical emergency there may not be a shortage of medical staff," the petitioner sought, the publication reported.

The PIL also sought the apex court to issue directions to the state government to submit a status report on the stampede and action against state government officials for their negligence. 

The stampede occurred during the early hours of Wednesday, when the barricades on one side of the Akhara road following crowd pressure. About 90 persons suffered injuries in the incident and 30 persons died.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a judicial probe into the incident. The three-member commission will be headed by Harsh Kumar, former Justice of the Allahabad High Court and it comprises of retired IPS officers V.K. Gupta and D.K. Singh.
