Chennai rains Today latest news: The Meteorological Department has said that moderate to heavy rain is likely to lash across 35 districts of Tamil Nadu until 1 pm on Thursday.
Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi, districts are likely to receive heavy showers, the Meteorological Department said. Thunderstorms are also predicted in at least some pockets in these districts by the weather department.
According to the IMD, the depression formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a deep depression. It is likely to move towards the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka in a westerly and northwesterly direction on Thursday, intensifying the northeast monsoon in the state.
Meanwhile, Chennaiites witnessed heavy spells of rainfall over the southern parts of the city and places around Mylapore, Mandaveli and Thiruvanmiyur. "Spell of the Monsoon for Chennai. Crazy rains that I have seen. It is like waterfalls and like 7.00 pm. After this spell there is break and there will be one more spell," Tamil Nadu Weatherman said on X around 11:30 AM.
"This spell in Chennai will be the heaviest one. Poondi dam is full and surplus water will be released in Kosasthalayar River. Poondi with almost nil storage before monsoon has become the 1st dam of Chennai basin to be surplus," he had said in a previous post.
