Kolkata doctor's parents open up about seeing their daughter's body: 'I told them it's not suicide'

As the CBI investigation into the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Hospital continues, the parents of the deceased doctor have opened up about seeing their daughter's body and how they realised it was murder and not suicide as the hospital authorities told them.

The parents alleged that the body was not in the same condition as it was found in the seminar hall of the facility.

The victim's mother said the first caller from the hospital said her daughter was sick. The call got disconnected immediately, after which they rang back. "They told me to come to the hospital. When we called again, the (caller) identified himself as Assistant Super and said your daughter committed suicide. She went to duty on Thursday and we got this call at 10:53 am on Friday," the mother told ANI.

She added that they were not allowed to see her body for at least three hours. "We could see her at 3 pm. Her pants were open and there was only one piece of cloth on her body. Her hand was broken, and blood was streaming out of her eyes, and mouth. Looking at her, it seemed that someone had murdered her," she said.

“I told them it is not suicide, it’s a murder," she added.

The victim's father said that they were told that the body was not initially found in the same condition. We can't say much as we were not allowed to see the body firsthand," he told reporters.

The father added that they couldn't divulge more details as the CBI investigation was ongoing.

Parents slam CM

They also lashed out at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for trying to stop the protests and for imposing Section 144 on the hospital premises. They added that more than one person could be involved in the crime and the Kolkata Police did not do a good job and tried to hush up the case.

"We decry any bid to muzzle the voice of the people, to stop the movement for justice as not one person is involved in the incident. We hope the CBI probe will unravel the truth," the father added.

He also hit out at Mamata for taking to the streets to protest while the state administration was muzzling spontaneous street protests. "What is the need for this duplicity? Is the government afraid of people?" he said.

The father also appealed to all the states and the country's people to stand by them.
