Amid an ongoing probe over the rape and murder of a woman doctor RG Kar hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday alleged BJP activists’ involvement in orchestrating vandalism at the healthcare facility. She also accused BJP of spreading fake news on social media on the rape and murder incident.

While addressing a rally, West Bengal CM pointed out that the truth should come out and some quarters are spreading fake news to mislead people. "Attempts are made to hide the truth by circulating fake news...we want the culprits to be punished," she said. 

Banerjee condemned the attack and demanded justice for the woman doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last week. 

"The nexus between the Left and BJP should be exposed. The CPI(M) and the BJP are behind the vandalism of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital," she said. 

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday lashed out at the West Bengal CM and asked her to "stop indulging in politics" over the rape-murder incident. 

A group of people entered the hospital and vandalised the emergency department, nursing unit and medical store in the early hours of Thursday. So far, the police arrested 19 people in connection with the vandalism incident.  

The mob also damaged CCTV cameras at the state-run health facility.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) alleged that the site underwent sudden renovations, potentially leading to tampering with evidence. While the Kolkata Police rubbished rumours that the seminar hall, where the crime happened, was vandalised. 

Amid raging protests against the initial lackadaisical approach of the police and vandalism. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal acknowledged that there was failure of assessment. Goyal said that the entire protest was supposed to be very peaceful and there was no intelligence of any massive vandalism. 

“We deploy our resources and try and see that law and order is maintained...There is adequate security and we are committed to it,” he said.
