Weather news: What Chandigarh, Himachal residents need to know about IMD's rain alert for next week

Heavy rain lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh with Dharamshala recording the highest rainfall of 214.6 mm, followed by Palampur (212.4 mm) and Jogindernagar (169 mm). Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Chandigarh received 18.8 mm rain on Saturday. So far, Himachal Pradesh has received 72.1 mm of rain against the normal of 35 mm, an excess of 106 per cent in the month of July, said news agency PTI.

Both Himachal and Chandigarh can brace for more showers from July 7, Sunday, the weather department has said. In the light of rain clouds returning, here is what residents need to know about the rain update for the coming days. 

Himachal Pradesh weather forecast: July 7 (Sunday) onwards:

  • The Shimla meteorological office has predicted heavy rainfall in the coming days in Himachal Pradesh.

  • A "yellow alert" has been issued as thunderstorms and lightning are expected to hit isolated places on Sunday. The thunderstorms are expected to make recurrent appearances till July 12, Friday, the department added.
  • The MeT also asked people residing in the state's low-lying areas to remain prepared for extremities caused by heavy rains and thunderstorms. Waterlogging, traffic disruption, damage to kutcha houses and crop destruction are likley to affect these areas in the coming days due to strong winds and rain.

Chandigarh weather forecast: July 7 (Sunday onwards):

  • In Chandigarh, the rainfall is likely to persist at least for the next five days, the Hindustan Times quoted IMD officials as saying.
  • Over the next three days, the maximum temperature will remain around 34°C, the report added.
