A prominent Maharashtra leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) was fired at by two unidentified men in Nashik district in the wee hours of Monday. Former Malegaon mayor Abdul Malik was targeted by two men, who arrived on a motorbike, near a petrol station in Nashik's Old Agra road, police told the media.
The AIMIM leader suffered bullet injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. His condition is said to be stable, news agency PTI reported.
Two motorbike-borne men approached Malik at around 1:20 am when the latter was at a tea stall by the petrol station on the Old Agra road. They fired thrice before fleeing the spot, and the politician suffered bullet injuries to his chest and leg, a Malegaon city police source told PTI.
Malik was injured and rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition was reported to be stable, they said.
The police have registered a case against the two unidentified persons under relevant Indian Penal Code sections, including 307 (attempt to murder). Further investigation is underway.
