Lok Sabha polls: 49 constituencies to go to polls in fifth phase, 695 candidates in fray

As many as 49 constituencies across eight states will go to polls in the fifth phase of elections to Lok Sabha on Monday. Also, bypolls to two assembly constituencies in Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh respectively are being held tomorrow.

According to the Election Commission, polling to five constituencies in Bihar, one in Jammu and Kashmir, three in Jharkhand, one in Ladakh, 13 in Maharashtra, five in Odisha, 14 in Uttar Pradesh and seven in West Bengal will be held on Monday. As many as 695 candidates are in the fray, and the highest is in Maharashtra, 264 candidates.

Key leaders like Congress’s Rahul Gandhi (Rae Bareli), Kishori Lal Sharma (Amethi), Bharatiya Janata Party’s Smriti Irani (Amethi), Piyush Goyal (Mumbai North), Rajnath Singh (Lucknow) and Chirag Paswan (Hajipur) are in the fray in phase 5. Bypoll to Gandey assembly seat in Jharkhand and Lucknow East in Uttar Pradesh is also scheduled for Monday.

In the first four phases, voter turnout was 66.95 per cent, the Election Commission said. As many as 451 million people have voted in polling held in 379 constituencies in the first four phases.
