A six-year-old mute boy died after he was thrown into a crocodile-infested lake by his mother. The dreadful incident happened during the late hours on Saturday in Dandeli taluk in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. A 32-year-old woman named Savitri, identified as the main suspect along with her husband Ravi Kumar (36) was arrested regarding the incident.
For the longest time, constant disputes were going on between the husband and wife over the speech disability of their son, identified as Vinod (6). They also have a younger son who is two months old. The suspect’s husband Ravi Kumar often questioned her decision to keep a speech-impaired child and suggested that she ‘throw the child’ as per police findings.
During the late hours of Saturday, the heated argument led the mother to throw her mute son at a sewage canal that links to the crocodile-infested Kali Lake.
After being alerted by the neighbours, the police along with brigade divers reached the scene to launch the search operation. The initial operation was in vain, as the night hours restricted them from finding the body.
On Sunday morning, the police resumed the operation and managed to retrieve the body with a missing right hand and scars all over the body that showed signs of a crocodile attack, a police officer suggested. The body was sent to post-mortem by the police for a precise finding, on the cause of death.
A case was filed at Dandeli Rural police station under sections 109 and 302 of the Indian penal code on the grounds of ‘murder’ and ‘abetment of offense’, the inspector of police said.
