5 killed in landslides and flash floods in Kupwara of J&K

Several low-lying areas in Kupwara and Handwara have been inundated

Landslides and flash floods resulting from heavy rains have claimed five lives in Kupwara of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to media reports, several houses were damaged in the heavy rains, and hundreds of people have been affected.

Landslides have been reported in Doda, Reasi, Kishtwar, and Ramban district in Jammu. Twelve houses suffered damages due to heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district.

Several low-lying areas in Kupwara and Handwara have been inundated.

Government and private schools remaind shut on Tuesday in Kashmir as a precautionary measure.

“Given the inclement weather conditions and the incessant rains, it is hereby ordered that class work in all government and private educational institutions up to the higher secondary level of Kashmir division will remain suspended on April 30 as a precautionary measure,” an order from Director of School Education Kashmir Tasaduq Hussain Mir read, reported Greater Kashmir.

On Tuesday morning, incessant rains led to Jhelum river in Srinagar crossing the flood declaration level.

The situation is expected to improve from Tuesday evening.

National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah reached Kupwara to take stock of the situation. He said he halted his election

"Due to non-stop rainfall in the last few days, in many areas, deluge has arrived. There are reports that water has entered several residences causing loss to people. Seeing the worsening situation in many regions, I halted my campaign, spoke to my partners and decided to arrive here to take stock of the situation...A comprehensive flood management programme is required to be prepared for this region. It won't happen overnight, but it needs to be done and will do so..." he said.
