Congress on Tuesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘mangalsutra’ remark and charged the latter would never tell the public that 40 per cent of the country’s wealth went to just 1 per cent of the population in 10 years.

Slamming Modi, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on X, “The Prime Minister will never tell you that more than 40 pc of the wealth created in the country from 2012 to 2021 has gone to just 1 pc of the population; approximately 64 pc of the total goods and services tax (GST) in the country comes from the poor, the lower middle classes, and the middle classes.”

Ramesh added, “Most of the public assets and resources sold in the last ten years have gone to one or two companies - economists have shown that the growing monopolisation of the economy has led to higher inflation. Today, 21 billionaires combined have more wealth than 70 crore Indians.”

Ramesh said India needs faster, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and, only the INDIA bloc will be able to deliver it. “India needs faster economic growth. India needs vastly more inclusive economic growth. India needs hugely more ecologically sustainable growth. Only INDIA can and will deliver this triad,” he said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also slammed Modi’s comments on Tuesday. Kharge said Modi's tactic has always been to divide. "This has always been his (Modi) tactic to divide. How to take the country forward is important. Leaving this aside, he is talking about Hindu-Muslim, Scheduled Caste, and Other Backward Caste. He is doing all this for votes, not for the benefit of the country," said Kharge.
