The Indian Navy on Friday unveiled the new design of Admirals' epaulettes, inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced during Navy Day celebrations that the design will do away with colonial elements and will have reflection of Chhatrapati Shivaji, the Maratha Emperor credited with building the modern Navy.

The epaulettes would be worn by Indian Navy’s Admiral, Vice Admiral, Rear Admiral, Surg Vice Admiral and Surg Rear Admiral.

The Indian Navy tweeted, “As we usher in the new year #2024, #IndianNavy proudly unveils the new Design of Admirals' Epaulettes. Adoption of the new design reaffirms our commitment to the two pillars of Panch Pran - ‘Virasat Par Garv’ and 'Ghulami ki Mansikta se Mukti '.”

The new epaulettes include a golden Navy button, an octagon inspired by naval ensign and from rajmudra of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a sword and a telescope. The Navy said the new design was a “true reflection of India’s rich maritime heritage”.

Navy said, “The golden Navy button reiterates our resolve to do away with Ghulami ki Maansikta. The octagon represents the eight Cardinal directions, indicative of an all-round long-term vision. Indian sword emphasises the very essence of our Raison d'etre, viz. be the cutting edge of national power and win wars through dominance, defeating adversaries and overcoming every challenge. Telescope symbolises a long-term vision, foresight and a weather-eye in an ever-changing world.”

Taking part in Navy Day celebrations on December 4 at Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, Prime Minister Modi said ranks in the Indian Navy would be renamed according to the Indian culture. Modi also announced the epaulettes adorned by naval officers will have reflection of Chhatrapati Shivaji, credited for building the country's first modern Navy.

“The legendary Maratha Empire founder knew the importance of naval power for a country and built a strong maritime force during his reign. Taking inspiration from Chhatrapati Shivaji, India has left behind the mentality of slavery and racing forward on all fronts,” Modi said.
