3-day Congress Working Committee meet in Hyd from Saturday; poll prep for 5 states on the agenda

Current issues like Manipur crisis to be discussed

Ahead of Telangana elections, the Congress will announce six ‘guarantees’ which would be implemented within a month of the party coming to power. The ‘guarantees’ will be unveiled by Sonia Gandhi at a public meeting to be held on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Sunday.

The guarantees are likely to include schemes related to farmers, senior citizens, women, and the poor.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will kick off its “historic” three-day meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday.

“The meeting will be a game-changer in Telangana politics,” said Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal. He outlined the agenda of the meeting which includes poll preparation for election-bound states, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Mizoram.

He expressed confidence that Congress will form government in Telangana while labelling the current state government as corrupt. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao form two sides of the same coin.

Venugopal further said current issues like the Manipur crisis will be discussed during the meeting.

On Day 1 of the programme, 84 attendees will include special invitees and four Congress chief ministers. Day 2 will see the participation of 147 leaders which will include CWC members, state party presidents, parliamentary party office bearers and central election committee members. The same evening, a public meeting will be held under the banner of ‘Jayabheri’. On the final day, party leaders will go to 115 assembly constituencies of Telangana to campaign for the party.

Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh emphasised the historic nature of this meeting, as it was the first time it has been extended to three days and taken place outside of Delhi. He highlighted that this historic gathering was influenced by the upcoming elections.

A. Revanth Reddy, president of the Telangana Congress, acknowledged the challenges they faced, including the state government's denial of permission for a public meeting. He praised the support of farmers who voluntarily provided their land for the event and hinted at new leadership joining the Congress during the programme.
