An aircraft carrying Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi made an emergency landing at Bhopal airport in Madhya Pradesh due to bad weather, police said on Tuesday. The Gandhis were on their way back to Delhi after attending a meeting of the opposition parties in Bengaluru.

Bhopal police commissioner Harinarayan Chari Mishra said the aircraft is likely to take off for onward journey around 9.30 pm.

Sonia Gandhi and Rahul had arrived in the Karnataka capital on Sunday for the crucial meeting which was attended by 26 opposition parties. The two-day meet culminated today, with the major takeaway being that the alliance has zeroed in on a name for itself. The united front which declared a joint fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 will be called INDIA, an acronym for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance.

Sonia Gandhi had not attended the last opposition meeting held in Patna on June 23.
