Congress president Sonia Gandhi is unlikely to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday in connection with a money laundering case as she is yet to recover from Covid-19. The agency had summoned both Sonia Gandhi and party leader Rahul Gandhi on June 8.

Reports said Sonia Gandhi, who had tested positive for Covid-19 on June 2, has not yet tested negative. A final call on joining the probe will be taken as per the doctor's advise about her health.

Rahul Gandhi, who had informed the agency his inconvenience to appear before it on June 8 since he was out of the country, has been given a fresh date of June 13 to join the probe.

The case pertains to alleged financial irregularities in the party-promoted Young Indian that owns the National Herald newspaper.

The agency, officials said, wants to record the statements of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The National Herald is published by Associated Journals Limited (AJL) and owned by Young Indian Pvt Limited.

The agency recently questioned senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Pawan Bansal as part of the investigation.

The questioning of the senior Congress leaders and the Gandhis is part of the ED's investigation to understand the shareholding pattern, financial transactions and role of the promoters of Young Indian and AJL, officials said.
