An attempt to attack UP MLA Om Prakash Rajbhar was made today in his constituency of Zahoorabad (Ghazipur).

In a video message, Rajbhar said he was in Ghosalpur village to express his condolences to a family for a recent bereavement, when 10-12 people armed with sticks stormed into the premises and began to abuse him.

“My supporters and security personnel escorted me to safety… if (the attackers) were not controlled, there would have been chaos.”

Rajbhar is the president of the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party and an ally of the Samajwadi Party. A former minister in the state’s BJP government, he had recently announced that he is talks with the opposition to cobble up a grand alliance to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Rajbhar said that while BJP supporters were claiming that law and order in the state was improving, if an attack was planned on an MLA, there was no hope for common people.

“If a legislator cannot go to meet his constituency members, cannot be with them on occasions of joy and sorrow, what is a legislator supposed to do,” said Rajbhar.

He said that he had contacted the ADG (Law and Order) and the local police and that his supporters would not rest till the miscreants were apprehended.

“They (my supporters) will continue to sit on a dharna (sit-in) till the troublemakers are arrested,” he said.

It is not yet clear what the men wanted or why they confronted Rajbhar.
