Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh on Thursday said that the number of militants in the region is decreasing but militancy is still alive.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the final match of J&K Police Martyrs Memorial Football tournament in Srinagar, Singh said the number of militants has been coming down over the last two years.

“That doesn’t mean militancy is over,’’ he said. “But the situation has indeed changed.”

Singh urged the youth to shun the path of violence and warned that innocent people will continue to suffer as long as guns and grenades are available.

“The youth who are carrying pistols, guns and grenades must give peace a chance,” he said.

The DGP said enough bloodshed has happened and women, children, youth and a large number of security personnel including policemen have died in the past 30 years.

“The violence leads only to destruction,” he said.

Singh said police are taking preventive measures to dismantle the militant infrastructure and also acting against the supporters of militants.

He said that the youth in Srinagar have played a great role in promoting football and cricket. “This indeed is a good achievement,” he said.

Sixteen teams participated in the tournament and the J&K Bank Football team won the trophy in Thursday’s final.

Singh said police will organise similar tournaments for female players.
