Former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Wednesday afternoon he had been detained by Mumbai Police after the BJP held a rally demanding removal of NCP Minister Nawab Malik from the state cabinet.

Fadnavis tweeted he had been taken to the Yellow Gate Police Station in Mumbai. He shared a video of himself at the station, surrounded by other BJP leaders.

Fadnavis said he and other BJP leaders had been detained following their rally at Azad Maidan.

Other BJP leaders who were detained included Maharashtra BJP unit chief Chandrakant Patil, leader of opposition in Legislative Council Pravin Darekar, former finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, former energy minister Chandrashekar Bawankule, Nitesh Rane, Ashish Shelar, Kirit Somaiya, Mohit Bharatiya and Prasad Lad.

Malik had been arrested in late February in connection with a money laundering probe by the Enforcement Directorate. Since then, the BJP has demanded his removal from the Uddhav Thackeray government.

The state assembly was adjourned briefly on Wednesday after Fadnavis demanded that the state government make a statement over the BJP's demand that Malik resign or be removed.
