Amid the hijab row in Karnataka, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Asaduddin Owaisi predicted that one day a girl wearing hijab will become the prime minister of India.

In a short video that he tweeted on Sunday, the Hyderabad MP says women wearing hijab will become doctors, collectors, judges or businesswomen. "I may not be alive to see this, but mark my words, one day a woman wearing hijab will become the prime minister of the country."

A few days ago Owaisi had come out in support of the hijab-clad girl who screamed alla-hu akbar at a crowd of men wearing saffron shawls. "Agar Muskan ko khatra hai to Asad ko bhi khatra hai (If Muskan is in danger, then freedom is also under threat)," he had said while addressing an election rally in Uttar Pradesh. What is the point of giving Owaisi security if a girl like Muskan gets heckled, he had asked, referring to the Centre offering him Z category security in the wake of a recent attack against him.

In a recent tweet, he supported students protesting for their right to wear hijab in educational institutions. "The young Muslim women students in Karnataka have demonstrated great courage under extreme provocation from Hindutva mobs. Their conduct in pursuit of their constitutional rights has been exemplary. The State has been complicit in this evil behaviour," he wrote.

Karnataka had witnessed protests for and against the hijab, with some of them turning violent, forcing the government to order closure of educational institutions.

After the Karnataka High Court ordered reopening of schools, the state government said this will be done in a phased manner, with high schools opening on Monday.
