Gangster 'Padappai' Guna, who has more than 24 murder and attempt to murder cases against him, surrendered before the Saidapet magistrate court in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. Guna was in the ‘wanted’ list and was being searched by a special team of Kancheepuram district police.

Guna reached the court premises and appeared before magistrate Krishnan. He was remanded in judicial custody till January 31, and the police were informed about Guna's surrender. He was then detained and taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for Covid-19 test. Later, he was taken to the Poonamallee prison.

N. Gunasekaran alias 'Padappai' Guna of Maduramangalam village near Padappai in Kancheepuram district, is a notorious name in the Sriperumbudur region. Guna was allegedly involved in scrap business in the area, which is an auto cum electronic hub. According to sources, Guna handles house keeping and labour contracts for most of the multi-national companies in the Sriperumbudur region with the support of powerful politicians.

Guna has more than 24 cases, including murder, attempt to murder, kidnap and extortion, against him in Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts. He has been absconding after a case was registered in Sunguvarchatram police station last year for threatening to murder a woman to claim her land.

Incidentally, in the first week of January ADSP Velladurai, known to be an encounter specialist, was posted in Kancheepuram to eliminate gangsters in the Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts, particularly in the Sriperumbudur area. The DMK government, sources say, brought in Velladurai to rein in on gangsters like Guna, who were dominating the scrap business in this area.

In the first week of January when the police were hunting for Guna in the Sri Perumbudur region, BJP senior leader and former minister Pon Radhakrishnan called on Guna’s wife at his residence. He also posed for a photo with Guna’s family which went viral. There were also reports of  senior BJP leaders calling on Governor R.N. Ravi, with the intention to ensure that Guna doesn’t get arrested as he is a BJP member. Party seniors like Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, Dr L. Murugan, and Pon Radhakrishnan had met the governor. Though it was said that the meetings were in the interest of the state, sources at the Raj Bhavan and police had claimed that the state BJP was trying to protect Guna.
