The marital status of a Trinamool Congress MP, who is also an actor, is now the buzz of not only Tollywood but in the heated up political circle of West Bengal as well.

Nusrat Jahan's high profile wedding in Turkey in 2019 with businessman Nikhil Jain made headlines all over the country. Jahan now says that her marriage was invalid technically and she was in a live-in relationship.

“Since the marriage was an interfaith marriage, solemnised on foreign land, as per Turkish marriage regulation, the marriage was invalid unider the special marriages act of India,” Nusrat said in a statement today.

The couple got married per Bengali customs and rituals.

Nusrat said her separation with Nikhil happened long back and she did not want to talk about her separation in order to protect her privacy. The actor turned politician, who won the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Basirhat said that her visit to any place for leisure should not concern anyone as she had borne the expense of everything. And the alleged marriage is not valid and tenable in the eye of law.

Hinting at the reason behind her split, Nusrat said that she had borne the “education expenses of her sister” and supported her family (parents) without help from anyone from the very beginning. Their separation was first reported last year in November.

“I need not use or keep anyone’s credit card, who I am not related to anymore. This too can be backed up by evidence,” said she in the long statement.

On the contrary, she alleged, that her 'husband' allegedly withdrew money from her account by accessing her bank account illegally “by illegitimate means at odd hours in the night even post-separation”.

“He has also been mishandling my funds from various accounts without my knowledge and consent. I am still battling it out with the banks and if need be, would release proof of the same,” said she through a statement.

She also alleged that her jewellery, gifted to her by family, friends and extended family, and her clothes were all held back by Nikhil.

“Being rich does not always give a man to act like a victim and belittle the woman alone,” she said.

She also asked her 'media friends' not to question her former partner.

Nusrat is presently rumoured to have a relation with another celluloid star in Bengali cinema who is a BJP member and contested the last assembly election. She refuted the claim by some people that she needed to get a divorce from Nikhil to move on in life. Many media organisations recently reported about her possible pregnancy, which Nusrat did not mention in her statement. Nor did she comment on her new relationship.

Nikhil could not be contacted for a response but it is now expected that she would come out with a statement.

Even if she has dismissed that she was married, but her wedding pictures photographs are available on several public domains. Her reception in one of Kolkata’s five-star hotel was attended by film stars, politicians and many dignitaries. It was not known how she dismissed all of them as well by saying it was all meant for a live-in relationship. A senior TMC minister was seen to take part in a proactive role in her marriage with Nikhil, who owns a famous sari brand in Kolkata.
