The National Investigation Agency on Monday said it had taken over the probe into the discovery of explosive material in a vehicle parked near the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai last month.

Around 20 gelatin sticks were found in a Mahindra Scorpio parked near Antilia, the residence of Ambani in South Mumbai, on February 25. Police claimed the vehicle had been stolen from the Airoli-Mulund Bridge on February 18.

An NIA statement said the agency "received orders from MHA for investigating the case registered at Police station on 25.02.2021. This case relates to recovery of explosives from a Mahindra Scorpio parked at Carmichael Road, Mumbai. NIA is in the process of re-registering the case."

The case took a turn on March 5 when the body of Mansukh Hiren, the owner of the vehicle, was found in a creek in Thane.

Hiren's family alleged he had been murdered. Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh told the state Assembly on Monday the state anti-terrorism squad had registered a case of murder into the disappearance and death of Hiren.

The discovery of explosives had triggered a political slugfest, with the state BJP demanding the NIA investigate the matter. However, the ruling Shiv Sena-led alliance had accused the BJP of not trusting the state police.
