Police investigation into the death of two minor girls in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao has revealed that

the incident was a fallout of one-sided love affair by a man belonging to the neighbouring village. Two people have been arrested in the case.

The main accused, Vinay Kumar, is a resident of Pathakpur village that falls under Asoha police station, the same 'thana' which covers Baburha, the village of the victims. He was accompanied by a minor when the crime was committed.

Revealing this to the media on Friday evening, Laxmi Singh, IG, Lucknow said that the third girl who has survived but is in a critical condition at a Kanpur hospital was the target of Kumar’s affections. While the three girls—two sisters and their paternal cousin—were acquainted with the accused, Kumar was frustrated over the non-acceptance of his proposal by the survivor.

On February 17, as the girls were in their fields cutting fodder, Kumar and the minor boy came around to speak to them. They had bought with them chips and water laced with insecticide.

As per Singh, Kumar in his confession has said, “During the lockdown we  became friends. Our farms were next to each other. We would play around on the farm. We would often sit around and eat together. I was in one-sided love with her. I asked her phone number but she refused to give it to me. I was angry and made up my mind to kill her”.

Kumar discussed his plan with his young friend. The two met the girls in the field where they were cutting fodder. The five then sat around talking and eating the chips. When the young woman who Kumar loved asked for water, he gave her the bottle of insecticide-laced water. The two other girls also drank water from the same bottle. As they began to froth at the mouth, the two accused ran away, leaving the girls in that condition.

An FIR under Sections 302 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code had been registered against unknown persons by the brother of the two sisters who died on the spot.

Singh said that a police informer had been instrumental in leading the team to the accused.
