A traffic constable in Bhopal, who cited wife's wrath as the reason for seeking leave, got a disciplinary rap in place of leave for violating service rules as well as seeking repeated leaves despite overshooting his quota for the year. The cop has been attached to the police lines.

The leave application of constable Dilip Kumar Ahirwar has gone viral, notably for the post script that has been placed in a box by the cop to highlight it.

The constable sought five days of special leave saying it was very important for him to attend the wedding of his 'real brother-in-law' (wife's brother) scheduled for December 11.

In the boxed post script, the constable mentioned in Hindi “Prarthi ke patni ka spasht kehna hai ki agar bhai ki shaadi mei nahi aaye toh parinaam achha nahi hoga (The wife of the applicant has made it clear that if he (applicant) did not attend the wedding of her brother, the outcome will not be good).”

Social media users were seen sympathising with the traffic cop in the lighter vein, saying what the constable had written in the post script was more than true.

However, Ahiwar's superiors were far from amused. Additional superintendent of police Sandeep Kumar Dixit confirmed to THE WEEK that disciplinary action has been initiated against constable Ahirwar.

“He is in the habit of seeking repeated leaves and has already availed 55 leaves in the past 11 months despite the COVID-19 contingency. Also, the way he drafted his application (in context of the post script) is against the service rules under para 64 of MP Police Regulations. Cops are given leaves whenever necessary, but this was a discipline matter,” Dixit said.

He mentioned that the constables get 12 days of casual leave and 30 days of special leave in a year. Apart from this, emergency leaves are sanctioned as required. “Ahirwar used up all kinds of leaves for the year and currently there is a prohibition on grant of leave due to the ongoing farmers' agitation,” the additional SP said.

When asked, Dixit said the department had not been able to ascertain whether the constable's brother-in-law was indeed scheduled to get married.
