Micro-blogging site Twitter has apologised in writing to a Parliamentary panel for showing Ladakh as part of China. Meenakshi Lekhi, chairperson of the Joint Committee of Parliament on Data Protection Bill, told ANI that Twitter has promised to rectify the error by the month-end.

“Twitter has apologised for hurting Indian sentiments and has sworn to correct the error by November 30, 2020,” Lekhi said.

Twitter's affidavit submitted before the panel was signed by its Chief Privacy Officer Damien Karien.

The social media platform had come under heavy criticism after its geo-tagging feature displayed "Jammu & Kashmir, the People's Republic of China" in a live broadcast from Leh's Hall of Fame, a war memorial for fallen soldiers in the Union Territory of Ladakh.

In a letter to Twitter on October 22, the government had lodged strong protest and warned that any disrespect towards the country's sovereignty and integrity was totally unacceptable.

However, Twitter termed it as a “technical” issue and that it would be resolved soon.

Earlier this month, the IT ministry had sent a show cause notice to Twitter for showing Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir instead of Union Territory of Ladakh. The notice termed the discrepancy in the map as a “deliberate attempt to undermine the will of sovereign Parliament of India”.
