Three BJP workers were shot dead by militants in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Thursday evening.

The attack took place at YK Pora in Qazigund, sources said.  After the attack the area was cordoned off by the security forces to trace the attackers.

The slain were identified Fida Hussain, Umer Hajam and Umer Rashid Beigh. Hussain is BJP Yuva Morcha general secretary in Kulgam. Both he and Hajjam are residents of YK Pora while Beigh is a resident of Sopat.

After the attack, the BJP workers were rushed to a hospital but all three succumbed to the injuries.

According to a local news agency, medical superintendent of the emergency ward at the hospital in Qazigund, Dr Asima Nazeer said that the trio were brought dead to the hospital.

Militants have of late repeatedly targeted the BJP workers after the revocation of Article 370 last August.

Many BJP workers have been shifted to secure locations and hotels by the police to prevent attacks on them by militants.

BJP’s J&K spokesman Altaf Thakur strongly condemned the killing of the party workers. He said militants do not spare even unarmed people on the auspicious occasion of Eid-e- Milad un Nabi (birthday Prophet Muhammad). He urged the police to track down the killers and punish them.
