Three militants and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Jammu and Kashmir Police were killed in an encounter at Panthachowk in Srinagar, officials said on Sunday.
The encounter began after three bike-borne militants fired at a naka party (checkpoint) at Panthachowk on Saturday evening in which no one was hit.
The militants fled the spot after the firing but the security forces quickly launched a search operation in the area that led to an encounter.
One militant was killed in the initial firing between security forces and the militants while ASI Babu Ram was critically injured.
He was shifted to the Army hospital at Badami Bagh where he succumbed to the injuries.
Later, two more militants were killed in the encounter, taking the number of militants killed to three.
Attacking naka parties has emerged as the new tactic by militants.
On August 17, five security men including two CRPF men, two Army men and a policeman were killed after three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants attacked a naka party at Kreeri in Baramulla.
The three militants were killed later after the security forces launched a search operation in the area and engaged the militants in a firefight.
Earlier, militants had attacked a naka party at Nowgam on August 14 in which two policemen were killed.
On July 1, militants attacked a joint naka party of police and CRPF at Arampora, Sopore, in Baramulla, in which one CRPF man and a civilian were killed.
The killing of the civilian evoked widespread condemnation after his family alleged he was shot dead by CRPF, who dragged him out of his car.
With the killing of three militants at Panthachowk, the number of militants killed in the last two days has risen to ten. Two security men also lost their lives in the three encounters, two of which happened in Pulwama and Shopian.
