At a time when the BJP in Tamil Nadu is working hard to position itself ideologically against the Dravidian majors, one of their members caused a huge embarrassment for the party, forcing the party to expel him.

State executive member of BJP's OBC wing P. Luvango Adaikkalraj was expelled from the post and party membership on Wednesday, a day after he and four of his associates were arrested by the Trichy police for smuggling opium.

Adaikalraj was arrested by the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau and the Organised Crime Intelligence Unit for smuggling 1.8kg opium worth Rs 4.5 lakh.

Adaikalraj was made the executive member of the OBC wing during the recent reshuffle, by the regional president L. Murugan.

In a statement, state general secretary Karu Nagarajan said Adaikkalraj was removed from the party post. He was also expelled from the party for indulging in anti-social activities and tarnishing the image of the party, he said.
