After Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government on Monday gave permission to the opposition party to run 1,000 buses for migrants in the state.

The state government has requested the Congress leader's office to provide details of the buses, including their numbers and names of drivers.

On May 16, Gandhi had hit out at the Yogi government over the accident in Auraiya in which 24 migrant labourers were killed, saying it has again raised the question as to why the government is not facilitating the migrant labourers' journey to their homes.

"Auraiya's heart-rending incident has once again raised the question that why is the government not making proper arrangements for the migrant labourers to go home? Why are buses not being run in the states to take labourers home?" Gandhi had tweeted.

At least 24 migrant labourers lost their lives and 36 people sustained injuries when a trailer truck carrying them collided with another truck in the early hours of Saturday in Auraiya district.

Gandhi, the Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh East, said in a letter to the chief minister that her party would bear expenses of their homeward journey.

"Respected chief minister, I am requesting you, this is not the time for politics. Our buses are standing at the border. Thousands of labourers and migrants are walking towards their homes without food or water and after fighting all troubles. Let us help them. Give permission to our buses," she said.

She also helped a group of migrant labourers walking from Ambala to Chattarpur in Madhya Pradesh as they reached Faridabad, arranging for transport as well as food, water, medicines and masks for them, according to the Congress.
