The ministry of health and family welfare announced on Saturday morning that a total of 2,293 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the past 24 hours. This is the first time that number of new COVID-19 cases in India has crossed the 2,000 mark in a single day, the highest-ever since the infection spread across the country in early March.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India as of Saturday morning is 37,336. This includes 26,167 actives cases and 9,950 people who were cured or discharged. A total of 71 deaths were also reported in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths to 1,218.

This is the third 'jump' of over 1,500 new COVID-19 cases in the past five days. As many as 1,909 cases were reported on Tuesday and 1,700 on Wednesday nationwide.

The announcement by the ministry of health and family welfare is likely to heighten concern about efficacy of lockdown measures in curbing COVID-19. Bloomberg reported earlier this week that analysis of COVID-19 data showed that India's lockdown was not "flattening" the curve of COVID-19 infections unlike similar moves in Spain and Italy.

Bloomberg reported that Italy and Spain saw a downward trend in coronavirus cases around the 13th day of their lockdowns, unlike India, where rates of new infections have not slowed, despite the lockdown being in place for nearly 40 days now.

Bloomberg focussed on India's low volume of testing for COVID-19. "India is now conducting about 50,000 coronavirus tests a day, not far behind Italy’s daily number, those efforts only amount to about 0.5 tests for every thousand people in its massive population, according to data compiled by Our World in Data. Italy, by comparison, has conducted about 30 tests for every thousand people," Bloomberg reported. The ministry of health and family welfare announced on Saturday morning that a total of 2,293 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the past 24 hours.
