A giant asteroid, named 1998 OR2, will fly past the earth around 3.25pm (IST) on Wednesday. According to NASA, "The asteroid will get no closer than about 3.9 million miles (6.3 million kilometres), passing more than 16 times farther away than the Moon," but it would still provide scientists an opportunity to study the 2km-wide object in detail.

Asteroid 1998 OR2 was discovered in 1998. NASA scientists predict its next close approach to earth will be in 2079, when its approach will be closer: Around four times the lunar distance.
