Even as India has been witnessing a steep rise in the number of novel coronavirus cases, reports of violation of lockdown norms continue to pour in from across the country. Though the police and health officials have been making every effort to enlighten people on the need for social distancing, a vicious apathy was visible, at least from a section of people.

Now, the local police in Dhone town in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh has come up with an innovative way for the public awareness drive.

The police hired a group of artists who, dressed up as ‘Yamaraja’ or the god of death and his aide ‘Chitragupta’, went around the town, warning people of the consequences if they step out of their houses.

“Yamaraja is looking for you. If you come out on to the roads, he will take you away,” they were heard shouting.

Police said they were holding bandobast every day and creating awareness to the public.

“We brought artists in the form of Lord Yamraj and Chitragupta and coronavirus. The people should voluntarily observe lockdown, as it is a national pandemic, equivalent to war," Sudhakar Reddy, Circle Inspector Dhone rural police station, told ANI.

Andhra Pradesh witnessed a massive jump in COVID-19 count as 47 fresh cases were reported since Tuesday night. At present, there are 87 coronavirus patients in the state.
