Amul to hike milk prices by Rs 2 from Tuesday

In view of COVID-19 cases being reported in the country, AMUL, India’s brand of dairy products, has banned the entry of visitors to its chocolate plant located in Anand, Central Gujarat.

Set up in 1946, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) markets products under the brand name Amul, which is a household name in India. The cooperative is jointly owned by over 3.6 million milk producers.

The brand has a turnover of over Rs 45,000 crore.

R. S. Sodhi, managing director of Amul, told THE WEEK that the decision was taken keeping in view the safety of the consumers and the workers.

The Anand plant of Amul can manufacture about 1,000 ton chocolate per month and gets about 3,000 visitors every day. There is no entry fee.

Sodhi said that visitors have also been banned in other plants located in Gujarat including its dairy plant.

The entry has been banned for a month and the situation will be reviewed later.

Extra precautionary measures are being taken for all the employees working at Amul’s different plants.

Sodhi said that temperatures of the staff are being checked when they report for duty.

The MD said that the temporary closure is following an advisory issued by the Central Government against public gatherings.

The brand has assured that there won’t be any effect on production.
