In a shocking incident, a man and his estranged wife are in police custody following the disappearance and death of their one-and-half-year-old child in Kannur, Kerala, on Monday.

Hours after Viyan was reported missing from his mother's house early on Monday, his body was found near the sea wall of Thayyil beach in Kannur around 10am.

Viyan was reported missing by his mother, Saranya, around 6am on Monday morning. A gold chain was reported to be missing from his body.

Manorama Online reported that the police are suspecting the parents of being involved in foul play, after they noticed discrepancies in their statements.

While the father, Pranav, claimed that Viyan had gone to sleep the previous night with his wife, Saranya claimed she had asked Pranav to take care of him on Monday morning.

Manorama Online reported that Pranav and Saranya were in a troubled marriage and were on the brink of divorce. "Saranya was getting marriage proposals and Pranav had been barred from visiting her house by her father," Manorama Online reported. Pranav came to the house in the absence of Saranya's father.

Another media group in Kerala reported that a relative had accused Pranav of foul play. He claimed the child was in Pranav's room till Monday morning and alleged Pranav did not open the door of his room.

Police officials quoted by Manorama Online said they are nearing a decision on making an arrest in the case.
