Modi, Bosonaro meeting

India and Brazil are expected to ink as many as 15 agreements in fields ranging from oil and gas to mining to security as Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hold talks in Delhi on Saturday.

Bolsonaro, who is the chief guest for the Republic Day parade, arrived in Delhi on Friday with a large delegation of ministers and businessmen. Both sides will sign 15 agreements, which will include an investment cooperation and facilitation treaty, an agreement on social security, a pact on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and an MoU on cooperation in bio-energy. The two sides are also expected to unveil an "action plan" setting specific goals for deeper cooperation in a range of key areas.

Delhi court may take up plea of 3 Nirbhaya case convicts

A sessions court in the Patiala House complex in Delhi is likely to take up on Saturday a plea filed by three of the four convicts sentenced to death in the Nirbhaya gang-rape-and-murder case. The three convicts have accused Tihar jail of not handing over documents required for them to file mercy and curative petitions. Vinay Kumar Sharma has sought documents to file his mercy plea, while Akshay Kumar Singh and Pawan Singh have sought papers to file curative pleas.

All four are scheduled to be hanged at 6am on February 1.

Yashwant Sinha's yatra against CAA, NPR to reach Agra

The Gandhi Shanti Yatra-2020 of former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha is scheduled to reach Agra on Saturday. Sinha, who was minister for finance and external affairs in the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is organising the yatra to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Population Register.

Sinha started his yatra from Mumbai on January 9 and has so far travelled through Maharashtra, Gujarat and Haryana. His yatra is scheduled to conclude at Rajghat on January 30. Sinha will go to Etawah on Sunday, where he will be joined by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. From Etawah, both Yadav and Sinha will reach Lucknow on Monday. The Samajwadi Party has warned the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh could crack down on the rally.

AIMIM protest against CAA in Hyderabad

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen of Asaduddin Owaisi will organise a protest event against the Citizenship Act, NRC and NPR at the Khilwat Ground in Hyderabad on Saturday evening. The AIMIM had initially planned to hold the event at the Charminar but was denied permission.

The Telangana High Court on Friday set guidelines for the event, noting that bike rallies and hoisting of the national flag would not be allowed. The Telangana High Court also mandated that number of participants be limited to 3,500 and the event be held from 6pm to 11pm.

The AIMIM has projected the Jashn-E-Jamuriat event as being a night of "protest, poetry and celebration".

Hindu groups to demand NRC in Goa

Various outfits under the banner of 'National Hindu Movement' will hold a protest in Panaji on Saturday to demand that the National Register of Citizens exercise be carried out in Goa to identify and expel illegal Bangladeshi migrants. NHM convener Manoj Solanki said the protests would be held at 5pm.

Impeachment trial: Trump lawyers to begin defence

Lawyers representing US President Donald Trump are scheduled to begin his defence on Saturday in the impeachment trial.

According to reports, Trump's defence team is likely to focus its arguments on the accusations against the family of former vice president Joe Biden. The defence will have approximately 24 hours, spread over three days, to make their arguments.
