The Delhi Police on Friday imposed prohibitory orders in parts of the national capital amid calls by groups to stage protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

According to news agency ANI, restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPC were imposed in the Red Fort area, a large part of North East Delhi district and the vicinity of UP Bhavan in Chanakyapuri. Students of Jamia Millia Islamia University had called for a demonstration outside UP Bhavan at 3pm on Friday to protest against incidents of police firing on protesters in Uttar Pradesh.

In North East Delhi, Section 144 has been imposed in 12 police station areas, including the vicinity of Seelampur, which saw widespread violence on December 17.

The police organised flag marches in Seelampur, Jafrabad, Welcome and Mustafabad areas of North East Delhi on Friday.

Heavy police deployment has been made in the vicinity of Jama Masjid and Jamia Nagar, which have seen repeated protests against the Citizenship Act. A protest will be held at Jama Masjid after Friday prayers at the mosque.

The Delhi Police has announced it is monitoring social media sites to check for rumours.

On Thursday, as many as 213 people were detained from outside UP Bhavan for protesting against the alleged police atrocities in the state during protests against the Citizenship Act.

Another group has also called for a protest march from Dargarh Shahe Mardan, near Jor Bagh, to the prime minister's house to demand “unconditional release” of Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekar Azad and withdrawal of the Citizenship Act, National Register of Citizens and National Population Registry.
