In a novel initiative, the South Central Railway has installed an ‘Atmospheric Water Generator’ kiosk at Secunderabad Railway Station. The kiosk, installed on the first platform, directly harvests water from thin air through a series of steps.

The system was set up as part of the Green Initiatives and Water Conservation measures being adopted by the SCR.

“The generator allows air to flow into the machine through a filtration system duly filtering out the contaminants present in the moisture-laden air after which the filtered air passes through cooling chamber where the air will be condensed. The condensed air is converted into water and drops into a storage tank provided for the purpose,” a CSR spokesperson told the Times of India newspaper.

The kiosk will produce around 1,000 liters of water per day. Rs 8 will be charged for one litter water, along with bottle. If the passenger brings their own container, Rs 5 will be charged. Coin Vending machine facility is also available wherein passengers can directly fill their water bottles by dropping Rs 5 coin.

The water produced using this system fulfils the norms of World Health Organisation (WHO). The Ministry of Jal Shakti has also given its approval.

CSR has plans to set up similar kiosks in other railways stations as well.
