After the BJP put up a splendid show in the Karnatka bypolls, Dinesh Gundurao stepped down as the KPCC president on Monday, accepting moral and political responsibility for the party's setback.

Announcing his decision, he said he had expected the people's court to give a fair verdict with regard to defectors. Admitting that the prospects of the Congress were hurt as many from the party had quit and contested against it, he said he respects the people's mandate. Further, Gundurao congratulated all the winners.

He said the Congress leaders, including veterans Siddaramaiah, Mallikarjuna Kharge and D.K. Shivakumar had worked extensively during the campaign.

“During the Parliament elections, there were many factors for our defeat. But in this bypolls, it is different. I had more freedom and we fought the disqualification case legally. Our high command gave me a free hand to select the candidates too. So, I own up moral and political responsibility for the defeat. I am stepping down as the KPCC president,” he said while announcing his decision to quit as KPCC president.

“I had informed my leaders yesterday evening as I did not feel the result would be encouraging. I had a lot of responsibility even when we were part of the coalition government. Every day there was a crisis and we were firefighting, he said. “Today, the country needs the Congress party. We are all witness to how elections are won,” he added.
