Days before the Assembly elections in Maharashtra, a Shiv Sena MP was attacked with a sharp knife by a man during a poll rally in Osmanabad district on Wednesday.

Omraje Nimbalkar, who represents Osmanabad constituency, was addressing a rally Padoli Naigaon village in Kalamb taluka, when the youth came close to him, on the pretext of shaking hands with him, and stabbed him.

Though the attacker's identity is not yet confirmed, a UNI report claimed that the youth was Aniket Tekade who is residing in the same village.

Though Nimbalkar's supporters made an attempt to catch the assailant, he managed to get away. Police have launched a hunt to apprehend the culprit.

"While greeting the MP, the man attacked him with a knife and immediately fled. Nimbalkar got hurt on his hand but escaped a major injury because of his wrist watch," a police officer said.

The MP's father Pawanraje Nimbalkar, who was a Congress leader, was shot dead in his car near Kalamboli on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on June 3, 2006. Former Lok Sabha MP Padamsinh Patil is the key accused in that case.

On Monday, Shiv Sena leader Shyama Pehelwan Nandvanshi was stabbed to death in Maharashtra's Amravati, triggering communal tensions between two communities in the area.
