Media agencies reported on Wednesday morning that the CBI had registered a case against jailed BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and 10 other people in connection with the road accident involving the Unnao rape survivor. In 2018, the Unnao survivor had accused Sengar of raping her repeatedly.

The Unnao rape survivor and her family met with an accident as the car they were travelling in to Rae Bareli was hit by a truck on Sunday. Two of her aunts were killed, while the survivor and her lawyer sustained critical injuries.

Opposition parties had demanded that the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh hand over the case to the CBI, alleging there was a conspiracy to wipe out the Unnao survivor and her family. The Uttar Pradesh government announced on Monday night that it had officially recommended to the Centre that a CBI probe be launched into the accident involving the Unnao rape survivor.

ANI reported the CBI had registered a case against Sengar and 10 others over the road accident. The CBI has also registered a case against “20 unknown persons” for criminal conspiracy, murder, attempt to murder and criminal intimidation. Sengar was already being probed by the CBI over the accusations he had raped the Unnao survivor.

Meanwhile on Tuesday night, the King George Medical College in Lucknow indicated that the condition of the Unnao rape survivor and her lawyer had improved. “The lawyer has been put off ventilator and is on oxygen (support). The girl is on ventilator and is responding well,” Dr Sandeep Tiwari of the KGMU told THE WEEK. Tiwari added the hospital still cannot make a prognosis of the case.
