Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh from Tripura government for the family of Kerala custodial death victim Sreejith on Thursday. Biplab Kumar, who is in Kerala for a bypoll election campaign, announced the ex gratia during a visit to Sreejith's residence in Kochi.
Sreejith was allegedly subjected to custodial torture by Kerala police and died while undergoing treatment. The death of Sreejith caused a furore in Kerala. Sreejith, along with nine others, was taken to custody relating to the suicide of a man. But later it turned out that the police had arrested the wrong Sreejith in the case.
Last week, the Kerala government had announced Rs 10 lakh and a government job for Sreejith's wife.
Meanwhile, Biplab Kumar Deb will proceed to Chengannur for BJP's election campaign on Thursday. Biplab will be BJP's star campaigner for the upcoming Chengannur bypolls.
