Congress leader killed in militant attack in Kashmir

A Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Patel, was killed after militants ambushed his vehicle at Rajpora in Pulwama district in south Kashmir.

Two Special Police Officials (SPOs)—Imtiyaz Ahmed Zargar and Bilal Ahmed Mir— who were traveling with Patel sustained injuries in the attack.

Patel was rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

A police officer said Patel was grievously injured in the attack, and he succumbed on the way to the hospital.

He said Zargar and Mir have been admitted to the hospital and their medical report is awaited.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has condoled Patel's killing. “Heartfelt condolences to the family of senior Congress leader, G. N. Patel who was killed by militants today in Rajpora. Such cowardly acts achieve nothing but leave one more family devastated,” she tweeted.

“In a despicable attack, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Patel was shot dead in Rajpora, Kashmir. My deepest condolences to his family. His 2 PSOs are battling injuries. Please keep them in your prayers,” tweeted Salman Anees Soz, senior Congress leader.

Former chief minister and NC president Omar Abdullah tweeted: “What terrible news to start the day with here. My heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and prayers for the injured. Allah Jannat naseeb karay
