St Joseph’s Hospice in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpet district which moved corpse, veggies and two elders in one ambulance will be shut down immediately. The home is being shut down following the Revenue District Officer’s report saying that both the home and the cemetery were being run without a licence.

The elders at the destitute home will soon be transferred to yet another home. According to the order put out by the RDO, “The primary reason for the shutting down is that the hospice does not have a licence. It has been operating its cemetery too without a license.”

Talking to THE WEEK, RDO, Noor Mohammad said, “all the inmates in the home will be shifted to another government home tonight itself. Later, they will be sent to their own place of choice if they want to move out. We will get their addresses and enquire how they were brought in.” The violations are being investigated by the police and a detailed report will soon come out after it, he clarified.

A few days before, the St Joseph’s hospice at Palaswaram village, 70 kms down Chennai, came under scanner, after a vehicle which looked like an ambulance was apprehended by a stranger, when he heard an elderly woman from inside the vehicle crying for help. After reports of the old woman being transported along with corpse and veggies, enquiries on cracking down the illegalities in the home began. The Revenue Divisional Officer had, after the media reports on the destitute home, stated that a detailed report about the home will be compiled based on inputs from the Health Department and the police.
