Wegovy gets CDSCO approval: Can Novo Nordisk's semaglutide change fatty liver treatment?
The approval offers a new treatment option for adults with MASH, alongside a calorie-controlled diet and increased physical activity
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has approved Novo Nordisk India's semaglutide injection, marketed as Wegovy, for the treatment of noncirrhotic Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), a significant development in addressing fatty liver disease. This marks Wegovy as the first GLP-1 RA with dual global and Indian approval for MASH, targeting adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis, and is to be used alongside dietary changes and increased physical activity. MASH, characterized by fat buildup, inflammation, and liver damage, is frequently associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol, making this new treatment option a crucial advancement for managing these interconnected health issues.

In a major development in the healthcare sector, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has approved Novo Nordisk India's latest drug that aims to treat the burden of fatty liver disease in the country.
Novo Nordisk India introduced Wegovy (semaglutide injection 2.4 mg) for the treatment of fatty liver disease and claims to be the first and only GLP-1 RA to be approved both globally and in the country for the treatment of noncirrhotic Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH).
The injection is used for the fatty liver treatment in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis along with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity, Novo Nordisk India informed.

"This approval is an important milestone, giving doctors and patients a new option for people at risk of MASH while also helping to address obesity and related heart and metabolic diseases," said Novo Nordisk India MD Vikrant Shrotriya.
